Over the last few months, I’ve noticed “TW” being used as shorthand for “trigger warning” a lot. I’m wondering why on earth is that? and where did this come from? But mostly, why has it taken off?

Is a trigger warning really something you want ambiguity around? Is it something you really want to…

Yes! Edit: It also reminds me how some people use acronyms etc. which can leave people out — and sometimes it’s to show how smart and in the know the person using the acronym is. I mean a lot of us do it sometimes and correct ourselves but some people persist with it. Using acronyms can also exclude someone out of the group — like a knowledge hierarchy.

Also been disturbed by a lot of the shit I have been reading on triggering. But that’s a whole nother story—and potentially a blog post!

yeah, I usually don’t say “trigger warning” actually because it is also jargon and I find it offputting.  I usually try to give some indication of potentially distressing content in the header or something, it’s easy to do that without saying “trigger warning”.  I mean TV does that all the time.

also I don’t like how “trigger warning” is often used without any qualification or further explanation, it carries this assumption that there is only one kind of trauma, usually private sphere sexual violence, that nobody has trauma related to state violence or mental illness or war or sickness or natural disaster etc etc. it’s a marker of a very particular kind of feminism.
