Can you imagine any other scholar being taken seriously for saying “I don’t get it.” You obviously don’t want this guy explaining politics, economics, or political economics to you.

I think Chomsky is not too bright but I personally don’t believe that he doesn’t get it
like, a lot of writing that works with the idea of dialectics is complicated, but the basic idea of the dialectic — that people in dialogue will be affected by each other’s statements and modify their position accordingly, and that social trends and movements are similarly affected by all that have come before them, that things have a tendency to move between action and reaction, a series of evolving backlashes — is almost self-evident
I think he’s engaging in a disingenuous folksiness
I think he’s saying “aw, shucks, I’m not like those inaccessible intellectuals” in lieu of actually engaging with his critics
