also have you noticed that the people who message me here, anonymously or not, tend to be respectful of me even if they think my views are outrageous and harmful? like, there is a lot to be said about Being A Woman On The Internet and how much it opens you up for harassment, definitely, but I don’t get stuff like fourteen consecutive anonymous messages telling me I’m ugly and I should kill myself, which is what happens to a lot of people
I think it’s partly because the way I write (impersonal; theoretical; relatively low on new slang; few selfies) usually comes off as more masculine than most people on tumblr (even genderanalyzer thinks so, fuq u gender analyzer, you can’t handle my écriture féminine) and also/therefore less vulnerable. I am relatively often put in the position of being the Girl Who Can Totally Hang With The Bros when I’m talking theory and politics, more because of the way I talk and write than because of my actual areas of expertise, esp. on the Internet when people can’t hear my Quinn Morgendorfferesque vocals. I experience less direct misogyny than a lot of other women.
but also like obviously, obviously, it’s because I’m cis and white, trans women and women of colour, all people of colour really, who write like me get 10x the aggressive messages
this carefree existence has not been the experience of white cis (or assumed to be white and cis) women friends of mine with similar writing styles/topics on other blogging platforms and I think it says something about tumblr
viz, it is super dominated by cis white ladies
