me and brighid, with braids, in her mirror on Flickr.

Some things from Vietnamese/American poet Linh Dinh’s extraordinary photo blog of his tour of the States.

side note: I met Concepcion Picciotto (the woman in the first photo) in 2003.  She’s been camped out the front of the White House protesting for nuclear disarmament since 1981.  She wears a padded bike helmet at all times to protect herself from beatings.

Wittgenstein was a film fanatic who made regular trips to the cinema. However, there are no film recordings of the philosopher; the closest we have is this series of seven photos that he took in a photo booth.

I really love the huge towers of amorphous greenery that creeping plants in the back courtyards of closely spaced houses become over the years.

Photo of the Day: A nameless Egyptian demonstrator takes on riot police Superman-style during the second straight day of anti-government protests in Cairo.
[h-ismail / h/t: ironicsauce.]

fuck i hope they’re okay.
(eta: because it could be confusing in this circumstance, singular they! worrying about the protestor, not the police.)

Yeah, this photo gives me a lot of anxiety, like I really don’t want to think about what happened afterward.

generally an issue with protest photography — capturing a single dramatic and glamorous moment of resistance is all well and good, but I prefer context, preferably context establishing that the rebel escaped unharmed.
like, anyone remember the Iraqi guy who threw a shoe at george bush, muntadar al-zaidi?  dude was tortured and jailed for nine months for assaulting a head of state.  he’s also an investigative journalist and political/humanitarian activist.  but that was elided by lefty coverage of the shoe-throwing, it became this one-off wacky spontaneous thing worthy of a bit of a giggle and then forgotten about.

(image: a light skinned person sitting with their elbows resting on their knees.  the shot is cropped above their elbows and their legs are splayed. the focus of the shot is under their very feminine, pink and red, lace and silk skirt.  it’s an expensive looking lounge room in miniature, with a plushly upholstered red couch and armchair set, an oval rug, a small round side table, and a tiny landscape picture in an ornate gilt frame.)
