- if you’re not gonna smash the university then at least make it free for everyone but also.
- as someone who’s been on the science and non-science sides of undergrad education, and watched people trying to organise re: opposing tuition hikes in both faculties, i gotta say it’s disappointing to see some tumblr commentary that buys into the same assumptions as the report’s authors, namely that STEM grads are basically guaranteed well-paying jobs down the line.
- science is underfunded, and to be competitive for the small number of career paths that are actually lucrative you are generally signing up for a decade (or more depending on postdocs) of zero savings.
- obviously i’m not saying STEM fields get anywhere near as raw a deal as the humanities.
- i just think it’s important to counter the idea that our support for undergrad education is a zero-sum game split between STEM and non-STEM.
- especially given that in so many jurisdictions (at least in canada idk about the states) science and engineering degrees are way more expensive than arts degrees, a legacy of neoliberal reforms dating to the late 80s/early 90s, and that the Lucrative Guaranteed Career Path Productive Members Of Society bullshit really does result in STEM students being more complacent in the face of continual hikes. i see a real need for counternarratives.
You are the worst person.
You can be a vegan and whine at people, thats hurting nobody but when you tell people to not take vaccines, you’re endangering public health.
If YOU mixed mercury, aluminium phosphate, ammonium sulfate, formaldehyde and viruses and injected it into someone, you’d kill someone because you have no pharmacological experience.
If someone in a lab mixed those together, they know how they work, they have medically assessed and peer reviewed evidence and strict guidelines to follow to create a safe and effective product. Why is it legal? Because they know what they’re doing and know how to spell “phosphate” and “ammonium”.
Why don’t YOU educate yourself instead of subscribing to the notion that all scientists are evil and want to poison you are your natural, vegan lifestyle. I say this as a fucking IMMUNOLOGIST, you are single handedly responsible for the skyrocketing resurgence of deaths caused by TB, measles and the worrying prospect of smallpox returning.
Let’s break this one down and give you some education.
- Mercury is an element in the compound thiomersal which was part of many vaccines. It has been claimed with NO tangible evidence other than a multifaceted correlation that thiomersals cause autism. This has been investigated thoroughly and no causal link has been found.
- Aluminium phosphate is an aluminium salt which is used as an adjuvant in vaccines. An adjuvant is a compound which causes an immune response to be higher and stronger, so that the immune system comes into contact with the attenuated virus more, so that it can recognise the antigens of the virus and provide immunity. They are a necessary part of the vaccine if you want it to work well.
- Ammonium sulfate is used in the process of purifying the proteins in the synthesis of a vaccine. It is also found in bread and flour, so you’d better learn to enjoy rice if you want to avoid it.
- Formaldehyde is used in the treatment and purification of vaccines and stops contamination. Most of this is removed before the vaccines is shipped, although some remains.
In my personal and scientifically backed opinion, the war against disease is a hundred fold more important than the mum-led war against vaccines. Do you want your child to die a slow, painful, agonising death? If not, then shut the fuck up with your so called “facts” you got from Yahoo Answers and get your kid vaccinated.
I am going to sound derogatory, but if you don’t have formal education in at least biology, you have no role to talk about the way vaccines should be done. You have no idea of the actual function and mechanism in which they work, and you have is a vague knowledge that mercury used to make people mad, formaldehyde is used in embalming and that ammonium sulfate and aluminium phosphate sound scary.
Vaccinate your kids if you want them to live. End of. If you don’t then you clearly don’t love your kids and would prefer to see them die of completely preventable diseases.
This has been a rage filled, alcohol induced response from a scientist.
Antivaxxers who link the vaccines to autism especially piss me off. Even if it WERE true and not falsified at all—after all, Andrew Wakefield completely falsified his data for his supposed vaccines-autism study and got his medical license revoked for it—so fucking what? These people act as if autism is more of a death sentence than measles.
There is a reason infectious diseases are no longer the first cause of death among children in developed countries.
Vaccines are that reason.
The anti-vax people are literally saying they’d rather have a dead child than an autistic child.
HERD IMMUNITY
“hey I don’t want my kid to become autistic based on some horseshit”
which is fine. whatever, you’re a shitty parent.
except what you’re also saying is
“…I also don’t give a shit if my unvaccinated kid transmits deadly illnesses to other kids”
when was the last time you knew someone who died of polio?
all this, plus a lot of people can’t be vaccinated for reasons outside their control — maybe they have an autoimmune disorder, or the vaccine’s not free and they can’t afford it, maybe they’re a kid and have a shitty anti-vax parent, whatever.
these are the people who most need herd immunity; not only in that they don’t get to choose whether or not they’re vaccinated, but also in that poverty, autoimmune disorders, extreme youth, etc make infectious diseases more deadly.
if you can be vaccinated and you choose not to be, you are endangering these people. your choices affect the people around you. the choice not to act is still a choice. ultimately you have to make your own choices based on what you think is best, but you better be really fucking sure of the science behind your decision before you choose not to be vaccinated or not to vaccinate your kids.
I did not even know about this guy, but now that I do, good riddance. And kudos to David Suzuki for tearing the guy a new asshole in ‘89.
Saying that Rushton’s ideas were “monstrous” and “simply do not qualify as science,” David Suzuki, an actual geneticist, debated Rushton on the Western Ontario campus in 1989 before 2,000 students and more than 100 reporters and television crews. Security was tight inside and out of the auditorium.
“I did not want to be here,” Suzuki told the audience. “I do not believe that we should dignify this man and his ideas in public debate.” A few minutes later, he added, “There will always be Rushtons in the world. We must be prepared to root them out.”
“his theories about the correlation between genital size and intelligence”
omg, that sentence alone…
I think the lesson here, though, is that a lot of people still love on this guy and think he’s speaking the hard truths, and he was never out of a job

don’t get it twisted i know you are a terrorist, i knew it the moment i checked out your blog..
You have an anti-israel post, i know all muslims are terrorists and i will tell you why. Muslims are taught to hate jews from childhood, there are countless videos on youtube from muslims calling for the destruction of of israel (a people), they chant that the end will not come until muslims fight the jews, I pity you for being involved in that death cult.
I could trash you and ridicule you which i do with most male muslims but i’m not going to, instead i invite you to become atheist, being an atheist makes you appreciate life, all that hate that religion produces will then seem silly and ridiculous to you, there is absolutely no reason to hate another human being to the point to want to see them dead. I know you want israel gone.
Islam produces nothing but judgmental people and martyrdom seekers, they think that by murdering themselves and people around them will appease a non-existent being.
Science on the other hand, it sets your mind free of all hate, it sets your life’s direction into appreciating reality, and make no mistake this is the only one life we get.
Become rational girl, leave the death cult and take off that silly sheet over your head. When you pray you are only talking to your self, there is nothing listening to you. It is illogical what you are doing silly girl, i invite you to study science, astrology, biology, history, then everything will begin to make sense to you. You are still young do not produce more little terrorists and embrace free thought instead.
Regards.
Intellectual Quantum.WHY DO ATHEISTS FEEL THE NEED TO SHOVE THEIR APPARENT INTELLECTUAL SUPREMACY DOWN OTHER PEOPLES THROATS. Y’KNOW WHAT, IF I WANT TO PRAY TO THIN AIR, I WILL. OBVIOUSLY I DON’T BELIEVE THAT I’M TALKING TO MYSELF. OBVIOUSLY IT’S NOT JUST A SHEET ON MY HEAD.
SERIOUSLY. WHAT THE FK MAN.
ok obviously this person is an idiot and a bigot and incredibly pretentious — but it caught my eye as particularly stupid because the history of Islam is so intimately intertwined with the history of science. not just in that Muslims are and have been eminent scientists, but in that their faith was part of their drive towards scientific knowledge. algebra was invented partly to help make judgements in Islamic inheritance law. huge advances in astronomy, mathematics, and geography came about partly because people needed to know where to turn when they prayed to Mecca, when important religious dates were, and so on. it’s kind of common knowledge that the science of the Islamic world wiped the floor with European science for most of recorded history. just because scientists and powerful faith leaders have often been at odds in recent Western history, doesn’t mean that religion and science are inherently opposed. that’s what militant atheists don’t get. you study history, “Intellectual Quantum”.

Well, if the artifact came from China (which is pretty common for ancient archaeological artifacts), Chinese civilization (like many others) has always gone by the lunar calendar, and a lunar cycle is roughly 28 days. So both women and men throughout Chinese history have marked out 28 day cycles. However, this nitpick doesn’t invalidate the larger point being made, which is that it’s so easy (in fact, we’re indoctrinated) to overlook women’s contributions in basically all areas of civilization and it very well may have been a woman who notched those incisions in that early calendar. (I also maintain the core belief that matriarchal societies were once prevalent and that women have led the way in most human cultural development.) It’s just that in this case, the writer’s assumption that solar calendars are the norm suggest a different kind of cultural assumption.

great point! also, lunar calendar =/= menstrual calendar, most people who menstruate don’t have a cycle that’s exactly in sync with the moon, and the moon being coded feminine is not universal across cultures. it’s actually pretty unlikely that the original calendar was a menstrual chart. (more.)

HEXEN 2.0 Suzanne Treister 2009-2011
HEXEN 2.0 looks into histories of scientific research behind government programmes of mass control, investigating parallel histories of countercultural and grass roots movements. HEXEN 2.0 charts, within a framework of post-WWII U.S. governmental and military imperatives, the coming together of scientific and social sciences through the development of cybernetics, the history of the internet, the rise of Web 2.0 and increased intelligence gathering, and implications for the future of new systems of societal manipulation towards a control society.
HEXEN 2.0 specifically investigates the participants of the seminal Macy Conferences (1946-1953), whose primary goal was to set the foundations for a general science of the workings of the human mind. The project simultaneously looks at diverse philosophical, literary and political responses to advances in technology including the claims of Anarcho-Primitivism and Post Leftism, Theodore Kaczynski/The Unabomber, Technogaianism and Transhumanism, and traces precursory ideas such as those of Thoreau, Warren, Heidegger and Adorno in relation to visions of utopic and dystopic futures from science-fiction literature and film.
Based on actual events, people, histories and scientific projections of the future, and consisting of alchemical diagrams, a Tarot deck, photo-text works, pencil drawings, a video and a website, HEXEN 2.0 offers a space where one may use the works as a tool to envision possible alternative futures.
HEXEN 2.0 is the sequel to HEXEN 2039 which imagined new technologies for psychological warfare through investigating links between the occult and the military in relation to histories of witchcraft, the US film industry, British Intelligence agencies, Soviet brainwashing and behaviour control experiments of the U.S. Army.
i actually lol whenever this happens because anyone who thinks like anon clearly has no knowledge of evolution/natural selection/biology in general
for one thing “survival of the fittest” is not even a darwinian term it was coined by herbert spencer who was a social darwinist and social darwinism is dependent on a misinterpretation of the process of natural selection
all natural selection says is that those organisms best adapted to their environment will, theoretically, survive to reproduce and pass on their adaptive traits, unless for example they get eaten by a lion — so nothing is certain anyhow
and in humans’ case one of our major evolutionary adaptations has been the ability to produce technology as well as complex societies that depend on interpersonal cooperation
we are the species with the most advanced technology and the most advanced social behavior, and in theory, both of those things can easily be used FOR THE BENEFIT OF DISABLED PEOPLE
THE WAY WE’VE EVOLVED HAS MADE US PRETTY MUCH THE IDEAL SPECIES FOR SUPPORTING ITS DISABLED INDIVIDUALS, SUCK ON THAT
